Description
The goal of this clinical trial is to test if a single injection in the spinal disc works well. The investigational injection will be tested in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH).

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is very common and happens when the soft center of a spinal disc bulges out. This bulging can compress nearby nerves causing pain, numbness, or weakness in a leg.

This study is conducted at the UC Davis Spine Center. You will receive all study medication, or control injection and study evaluations at no cost, and compensation for your time is available.
This study requires

The study will take approximately 12 months. The study involves:

  • 10 study visits

  • Follow-up phone calls

In this study, you may receive the study medication or control injection. A control injection does not contain any active treatment. Please sign up to learn more.

Who can participate

  • People with a single lower back herniated disc (at L4-L5, L5-L6, or L5-S1)

  • Have associated leg pain for 6 weeks or more

Who cannot participate:

  • If you are receiving worker's compensation

  • If you have undergone lumbar surgery at the affected level

  • If you have a BMI ≥ 40

Benefits and risks of participating
You are not guaranteed any benefit by participating in the research study. Possible benefits may include decreased discomfort associated with lumbar disc herniation. Risks include back pain, pain in leg, back fatigue, skin changes near the injection site, abnormal lab values in blood tests.
