"Help us understand the link between ethnicity and Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)"
18 to 75 years old
Healthy Volunteers:
Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Healthy Hispanic Ethnicity volunteer
The purpose of this study is to understand the link between ethnicity and Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), which is a disease characterized by fat accumulation in the liver. For this study, we are recruiting healthy volunteers of Hispanic background to match to our existing bio-banked samples for the purpose of exploring variations in metabolomic profile between healthy and NAFLD volunteers , and between different ethnicities and gender groups.
This study requires

blood draw questioninaire

Who can participate

Inclusion Criteria: o Apparently healthy o Self-identified Hispanics Exclusion Criteria:
o Non-Hispanic ethnicity o Affected by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD or any other condition that, in the opinion of the PI, would interfere with methionine metabolism) o Use of tobacco o Use of illegal drugs o Drinks more than 1 alcoholic beverage/day o Pregnant women o Prisoners o Adults unable to consent o Use of medication that impacts lipid metabolism and/or inflammation Age Range: o 18 to 75 years

Benefits and risks of participating
The main risk of participation in this study is loss of confidentiality, which will be safeguarded with appropriate precautions. The risk of providing blood is low and includes bruising, infection, and minor discomfort and will be minimized by having blood drawn by a trained phlebotomist at the UC Davis Blood Clinic.
Efforts will be made to limit use or disclosure of your personal information, including research study and medical records, to people who have a need to review this information. We cannot promise complete confidentiality. Organizations that may inspect and copy your information include the IRB and other University of California representatives responsible for the management or oversight of this study, and the funding agency NIH (National Institute of Health).
If you agree to allow the researchers to use leftover biological specimen(s) collected from you for possible future research, the specimen will be stored in the researcher’s freezer for up to 20 years and may be accessed by our teams or others for research purposes (including, but not limited to: gene methylation) .Only information about your age, gender, and medical information (e.g. current medication use, recent or current illness, family history of liver disease) will be associated with your specimen. Your personal identifying information such as your name, date of birth, or address will not be given out.
Participation in research involves some loss of privacy. We will do our best to make sure that information about you is kept confidential, but we cannot guarantee total privacy. Some information from your medical records will be collected and used for this study. If you do not have a UCD medical record, one will be created for you. Your signed consent form and some of your research tests will be added to your UCD medical record. Therefore, people involved with your future care and insurance may become aware of your participation and of any information added to your medical record as a result of your participation. Study tests that are performed by research labs, and information gathered directly from you by the researchers will be part of your research records but will not be added to your medical record. Your personal information may be given out if required by law. If information from this study is published or presented at scientific meetings, your name and other personal information will not be used.
