"Does your child miss school because of his/her asthma? We hope to share tools to address your child’s health and improve school attendance."
Age: 5 to 12 years old
Healthy Volunteers: No
Keywords: asthma, school absence, pediatric asthma
Type: Behavioral study
80 Participants
This research study aims to address some of the main reasons why children miss school. In previous research, many families say physical health issues are the main reason for missing school. Childhood asthma is likely one of the biggest factors.

This research seeks to develop a team intervention. A school staff member and a medical professional will work together to visit children's homes with school absences due to asthma. The goal of this home visit is to address environmental factors that may be worsening your child’s asthma. We'd also like to review and reinforce the best ways to care and control your child’s asthma at home. We hope that your child will be able to attend school consistently.

Our goals are to refine and improve how we deliver our home visit intervention.
This study requires

If you and your child/student agree to take part in this research, the following will take place:

Our study coordinator will contact you to confirm consent to take part in the research

You will be randomly chosen to be in either the “Intervention” group or the “Wait-List Control” group. The treatment group will receive home visits in December through February. The wait-list control group will receive home visits in the last two months of the school year.

You will complete a survey, which will collect information about you and your child. This survey will take about 15-20 minutes to complete.

You and your child will complete a Childhood Asthma Control Test each month. This is a common series of questions and visual aids to determine how well-controlled your child’s asthma is. This survey takes 5 minutes or less.

The school district will provide the research team with the number of days your child was absent throughout the school year.

At the end of the study period, you will take another survey about your child’s school attendance and asthma symptoms. This survey will take about 10-15 minutes. If you are part of the intervention group, you will also take part in an interview about the home visits.

Benefits and risks of participating

We cannot promise any benefits to you or others from your taking part in this research. However, possible benefits include better asthma control and fewer days of asthma symptoms for your child. This study will also result in individualized attention from your child’s school staff and a pediatric physician. Fewer asthma symptoms in your child and better school attendance may also have benefits to your child’s education.

We expect there will be very little risk or harm that would result from being in this study. Taking part in this research will require some time commitment to complete surveys, and some inconvenience associated with allowing home visits from your child’s school staff and the research team. There is also a risk that we will not be able to maintain complete confidentiality regarding the information collected during this study. If you prefer we contact you and/or administer surveys through the internet, e-mail, cell phone/smartphone, or text messages, you will be responsible for your standard data and messaging charges.
You will not be compensated for taking part in this study.
