120 Participants
Breastfeeding improves both maternal and child health. We are studying if mothers with limited financial resources will exclusively breastfeed for longer, if provided with a breast pump. We will also study whether getting a book from the hospital leads to an earlier start at reading with baby.
This study requires

In the hospital, a research team member will go over a brief questionnaire to gather your contact information, some background information about you and your baby and your feelings about breastfeeding. You will either receive a manual breast pump or a baby book. The item you receive will be chosen by chance, like flipping a coin. You will have an equal chance of receiving each item (breast pump or book).

In 6 weeks: You we will contact you (either by telephone or e-mail) to ask a few questions about how your infant is feeding and about reading.

In 12 weeks (6 weeks from the first call): We will contact you a final time to ask questions about infant feeding and reading with your baby. We will also ask more questions to see what you thought about receiving the breast pump or book so we can see what you thought about it and whether either of those items would be helpful to distribute to mothers at the time of discharge from hospital delivery.
